Advent, Advent

03. Dezember 2014

As promised yesterday, today I’m going to talk a little bit more about the Advent season, the four weeks before Christmas that play a more important role in Germany than here in the US.

Advent

Christmas and Advent decorations can be found in almost every corner of our house:

  • There are six (!) Advent calendars in the kitchen that are filled with chocolate, little stocking stuffers or tiny pictures. They make waiting for Christmas AND getting up in the morning for my kids so much easier and much more fun.

Adventskalender2

  • Additional morning support is offered by the Elf on the Shelf and his newest hiding spot. The kids can’t wait to find him and to make sure he notices that they are being nice to each other. At least for now. But please don’t touch or the Elf loses his magic!
  • The Advent wreath is not hanging on our front door but is sitting on our table in the living room, decorated with four candles. On each of the four Sundays before Christmas we are going to light one more candle. The kids, especially the little one, loves playing with the tiny ornaments so I’m not sure whether the wreath will have lost all its needles by Christmas or will have burned down. We’ll see.
  • And last but not least there is Schnüpperle. A children’s book that tells 24 stories of a little boy named Schnüpperle and his sister Annerose. It’s my all-time favorite Christmas book (and my husband’s, too) that I have been reading since I was little. A family tradition that we can now pass on to our own kids!

What else is new? My kids are singing Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph without a pause which reminds me to look for the CD with German Christmas songs. We need more diversity! And I’m missing my favorite Christmas market in Braunschweig, Germany, with the best Poffertjes in the world!

And what about you? Which family traditions are you passing on to your kids this year?

Singen meine Kinder Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman und Rudolph in Endlosschleife.
