Daily Differences – Thanksgiving

26. November 2014

Since it is that special time of the year (again? already?), I’m going to turn my attention to seasonal holidays, customs and traditions in my upcoming Daily Differences Posts. This also means that you will get a glimpse into our very own German-American holiday hodgepodge that we have been creating for more than three years now. And it’s pretty easy to guess that we only pick the best of both worlds, of course! So drum roll for the first post: Thanksgiving.

Our Thanksgiving

The English Version

Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday in November (and no, there is no German equivalent to this holiday). It is a day for giving thanks. And it is also the most important holiday of the entire year. Families get together for a turkey feast with various traditional side dishes. People watch football on TV, decorate the Christmas tree(s) and might even make a trip to the closest shopping mall later in the day. The day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, has become the major shopping day of the year (recently though, the whole shopping madness starts as early as Thursday afternoon…): Special offers and deals, often limited in quantity or duration, can be found in each and every store. This causes long waiting lines in front of the stores, even in the middle of the night.

We are going to enjoy not one but two Thanksgiving feasts this year: Lunch with our American friends and their family and the traditional sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows and pecans which we might never warm up to. I have never ever eaten anything in my life that has been sweeter than this side dish. And it is not even a dessert! For dinner, there will be a German turkey feast – with homemade dumplings, honey-glazed carrots and a mixed salad. After this overindulgence I’m sure we will be as stuffed as the turkeys and might not have any energy left for a shopping spree. Thank goodness for Cyber Monday and its special online deals. Happy shopping! Wait, no, I mean: Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving! It’s the day that we say we are thankful. Thankful for all that we’ve got.

Happy Shopping! Ach nee: Happy Thanksgiving!
